Samsung takes “world’s largest storage drive” crown with 16TB SSD

Samsung has figured out how to supersize solid state storage with a whopping 16TB SSD.

At that size, Samsung has taken the lead for world’s largest storage drive, even compared to
hard disk storage. Last year, Seagate and Western Digital released 8TB and 10TB HDDs,
respectively, while Fixstars announced a 6TB SSD just a few months ago. Samsung’s new
drive fits within a 2.5-inch enclosure, so in theory it could find its way into laptops and desktop PCs.

双方の発表したプレスリリースを読むと東芝・SanDisk陣営が「現行製品と比べて書き込み速度の高速化、
書き換え寿命などの信頼性向上を実現しています」としているのに対し、Intel・Micron陣営は「大幅な密度
の向上と同時に NAND フラッシュのコストを低減」としていて、同じように多層化技術を適用していても、
主眼を置いているポイントが異なっていることが見て取れます。

つまり、東芝・SanDisk陣営はプレスリリースでも言及しているように高信頼性・高耐久性を要求されるデータ
センター向けSSDなどを主なターゲットとして三次元NAND型フラッシュメモリを開発しているのに対し、
Intel・Micron陣営は大量生産によるコストダウンも含め、数の出る一般パソコン用SSDやUSBメモリ、あるいは
スマートフォン内蔵ストレージ用などをターゲットとしている可能性が高いと言えます。

SSD technology has come a long way in recent times. Able to read and write data very quickly, they have become crucial for
capturing high bitrate, high resolution video to external recorders. The speed has always been there but it has taken a while
for capacity to catch up. It wasn’t that long ago that SSD drives were limited to capacities of under 500GB, but this year
we have seen several manufacturers really pushing the envelope. One of those is a Japanese company called Fixstars.
Back in May they unveiled the SSD-6000M, a 2.5″ SSD drive that packs 6TB of flash into a case that’s only 9.5-mm thick.

implementation of computer vision algorithms. Nevertheless, within the next few years
it will become realistic to run in real time these most computationally intensive components
entirely in software. To show this, we implemented and optimized a currently in production
stereo-based segmentation algorithm for an existing embedded low power GPU. Presently,
we achieve about 8 FPS at VGA resolution.

Last year we tested a Fixstar SSD but found that the drive was not suitable for standard desktop performance testing due to the low random performance.
The drive is designed for very specific workloads and should be used in conjunction with other identical drives in RAID arrays to serve content over networks.
Fixstars has several design wins with previously released SSDs that are used for video production environments in Hollywood studios.

当初は余りに高コストであるため、2016年初の段階で、有名ストレージ系のリサーチ会社でも、
2019年時点でのオールフラッシュ・サーバーの浸透率は10％という予想だった。 　

ところが、既にHP社のサーバー事業は、2015年第4四半期で、売り上げの39％が
オール フラッシュが占めるまでになった。

目下、フラッシュメモリーのビットコストはHDDの約6倍と極めて高コストだが、フラッシュ
メモリーはHDDに比べて、数々の利点があるため、サーバーメーカーの想定を上回る
ペースで、オールフラッシュの導入が進んでいる。
