最近の(16.04以降).conkyrcの記述方法は以下のように変更されてる

own_window = true,
own_window_transparent = true,
own_window_class = 'Conky',
own_window_type = 'normal',
own_window_hints = 'undecorated','below',skip_taskbar','skip_pager','sticky',

ちなみに古い設定ファイルを使うとエラーになる
