1985年に空軍でグアムに駐在していたとき、太平洋の地図を見ました。
グアムの真南に位置するオーストラリアは、太平洋の真ん中にポツンと浮かんでいた。
そのため、多くの隊員が、フィリピンやアジア諸国、
インドやインドネシアの島々ではなく、オーストラリアに旅行していました。
今の地図では、オーストラリアはインドネシア諸島の下に挟まれているのですね。
私の知り合いの多くは、なぜグアムからオーストラリアに向かったのでしょうか？
それが私の経験です。

I looked at a map of the Pacific Ocean when I served in the Air Force stationed on Guam in 1985.
Australia was the closest place to Guam ,
directly south, as both islands were alone in the middle of the Pacific.
So many service members traveled there instead of Phillipines,
Asian countries, India and the Indonesian islands. Now the map
has Australia tucked up beneath the Indonesian islands? Why did so many
people I knew travel to Australia from Guam when now it is the furthest away?
That's my experience.
